The Detroit Pistons’ season came to an end Sunday night after a tough 125-94 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. After one of Detroit’s best seasons in years, the loss disappointed both the team and the fans gathered at Little Caesars Arena.
The Cavaliers took control early and never allowed the Pistons back into the game. Detroit trailed 31-22 after the first quarter and fell behind by 17 points at halftime. Things only worsened in the second half as Cleveland continued to build its lead.
Pistons star player Cade Cunningham struggled offensively, finishing with just 13 points while shooting 5-for-16 from the field and 0-for-7 from 3-point range. With fewer than six minutes remaining and the Pistons trailing by more than 30 points, Cunningham was taken out of the game as fans began leaving the arena.
Despite the disappointing ending, many fans viewed the season as a major step forward for Detroit. The Pistons finished as the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and showed a completely different identity compared with previous seasons. Throughout the playoffs, the team battled through difficult moments, overcoming a 3-1 series deficit against the Orlando Magic in the first round and forcing a Game 7 against Cleveland before being eliminated.
After the game, coach J. B. Bickerstaff said he remained proud of the team and did not consider the season a disappointment. Cunningham spoke about how painful the loss was and said losing at home in front of Detroit fans hurt, but he added that the team could learn from the experience moving forward.
The loss was especially emotional for younger players such as Ausar Thompson, who said he does not want to forget the feeling of losing because he hopes it will motivate the team next season.
Even though the season ended on a disappointing note, the Pistons showed the franchise is finally moving in the right direction. For the first time in years, Detroit fans have real reasons to be excited about the future of Detroit basketball.
