Walking into high school for the first time can feel overwhelming for many freshmen. New classes, more difficult homework and meeting new people are just a few of the challenges students face during their first year.
For many incoming freshmen, the transition from middle school to high school is a major adjustment. Students must learn how to manage their time, balance extracurricular activities and keep up with schoolwork while also trying to fit in socially.
Current Wylie E. Groves High School freshman Cori Morgan said staying organized helps make the school year less stressful.
“At first, I was really nervous because everything seemed bigger and more serious,” Morgan said. “But using a planner and not waiting until the last minute helped me a lot.”
Many freshmen also say joining clubs or sports can make school feel less intimidating. Being involved helps students meet new friends and become more comfortable in a new environment.
Freshman Zoe Vickerson said being yourself is one of the most important things to remember.
“Don’t try too hard to fit in,” Vickerson said. “Everyone is nervous too, even if they don’t show it. Just be yourself and talk to new people.”
Teachers and upperclassmen often encourage freshmen to ask questions when they need help. Whether students need help with homework, schedules or finding classrooms, asking questions can make the transition easier.
Although freshman year may seem stressful at first, many students say it becomes easier over time. With strong habits, confidence and support from friends and teachers, freshmen can successfully adjust to high school life.
