At Groves High School, the debate team is known for its strong competitive record and commitment to critical thinking. Groves debaters secured first-place finishes in statewide competitions for several consecutive years, highlighting the program’s dominance and depth of talent.
This sustained success reflects not only the skill of individual debaters but also the strength of the program’s coaching, preparation and collaborative culture. Students are trained to research thoroughly, construct logical arguments and think quickly on their feet, skills that translate into both competitive and long-term academic success.
Participation in debate at Groves goes beyond trophies and rankings. Students gain essential life skills, including public speaking and communication, critical thinking, analytical reasoning, research and evidence evaluation, and leadership. As part of a school that emphasizes academic success and extracurricular involvement, the debate team complements a wide range of student opportunities, from advanced coursework to other competitive clubs.
The team’s efforts have translated into success this year, with members reporting strong performances and multiple tournament wins.
Team members Lexi Burger and Vanessa Archibald said preparation is key to success. Practice includes structured drills and listening to lectures, along with learning new arguments and analyzing recorded material to strengthen understanding.
Despite this preparation, debate presents challenges. Thinking on the spot is one of the most difficult aspects for many students, especially given the fast-paced nature of competition and the need to respond quickly under pressure. Time constraints often make it difficult to fully develop arguments, and rounds become more intense when opponents present numerous arguments in a short amount of time.
Students join the debate team for a variety of reasons, including gaining new perspectives, engaging with different viewpoints and building confidence in public speaking while developing valuable life skills.
Despite the challenges, students said the experience is still highly rewarding. Opportunities to meet new people at tournaments, improve communication skills, collaborate with partners and participate in online debates all contribute to the program’s appeal.
For many students, debate becomes more than just an activity; it is an opportunity to grow both academically and socially. Through competition, collaboration and consistent practice, team members continue to sharpen their skills while building confidence and preparing for future challenges inside and outside the classroom.
