If you’re like me and love movies that are a perfect blend of laughs, tears and love, then Regretting You is the perfect movie to watch.
Regretting You is a recent book-to-movie adaptation based on the novel Regretting You by Colleen Hoover. The story emphasizes the importance of family and embracing one’s true self. We follow the two main characters, Morgan Grant and her daughter, Clara Grant. The point of view switches between these two characters throughout both the book and the movie.
We start the story from Morgan’s perspective, whom is still in high school when she finds out she is pregnant with her daughter, Clara, and she eventually settled down with her high school sweetheart, Chris. Additionally, we are introduced to Morgan’s sister, Jenny, and her boyfriend, later fiancé, Jonah. We learn Jonah and Morgan are extremely close because they are both introverts and don’t like to party, whereas their partners are the opposite; this allows Jonah and Morgan to bond and form a connection. We then fast-forward to the present day, where we meet Clara for the first time.
She is driving home and sees a boy from school on the side of the road. This boy ends up being Miller Adams, whom we learn Clara has a crush on. Later in the story, Morgan gets a call telling her news that will change her life forever; Jenny and Chris passed away in a car accident. This car accident happens that brings a horrific secret to light. With the unexpected deaths and a shocking secret, Morgan and Clara must learn how to keep living life without the most important people in it. Morgan and Jonah learn that the reason both Jenny and Chris were in a car accident together was due to an affair they’d been having for months. This turns Morgan and Jonah’s worlds upside down. Morgan loses all trust in the comfortable life she used to know, and Jonah loses his faith as a father when he learns his young baby was never his.
Throughout the story, Morgan must figure out how to handle the accident and the secret while trying to protect Clara and find her true passion. Meanwhile, Clara, unaware of the secret, is trying to find out why her mom is pushing her away and is learning how to love while broken.
Throughout the story, Clara grows closer to Miller but further apart from her mom as she becomes a rebel and starts to break rules. As Morgan and Jonah try to deal with the news of the affair, they end up growing closer and eventually fall in love. When Clara finds out about the affair, she leans on her mother, and they are able to grow and move through the hard times together. Both Morgan and Clara learn how to live with no regrets.
Both the movie and the book were fantastic, and this was one of the best book-to-movie adaptations I’ve seen; however, I do recommend you read the book first. The book is full of inside jokes and extra background information that the movie doesn’t provide; however, the movie still has the complete story and most vital parts included in it, which still makes for a well-rounded, fun, and heartbreaking romance movie. Overall, I’d rate both the book and the movie 5/5 stars, and I definitely recommend you watch this movie if you love romance novels; you will have no regrets.
