Who is Grammy winner Victoria Monét?

There are some artists out there in the music industry who don’t deserve their titles, but Victoria Monét is not one of them. Monét has been making music since 2015 when she first debuted her album “Nightmares and Lullabies”. Since then she has written music for other artists like Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, and Blackpink. She has also recently released her album “JAGUAR II” in August 2023 and began her The Jaguar Tour in September 2023 —and this April, she will be one of the many artists playing at the famous music festival Coachella.

Monét was nominated for America’s “Best New Artist” along with eight others, those nominees were Coco Jones, Gracie Abrams, Ice Spice, Fred Again, Noah Kahan, Jelly Roll, and The War and the Treaty. Monét is best known for her hit songs “On My Mama” and “MONOPOLY (Ft. Ariana Grande)”. These songs were popular on social media for quite some time, according to Groves High School students they have never streamed her music on any platform before, they have only heard it on TikTok. Based on her recent accomplishments, it’s safe to say Monét’s career has been very successful—she is on tour, performing for a music festival, and has released four albums.

Monét’s win has been very controversial on social media because people think the “Best New Artist” Grammy is meant to be given to newer artists with the potential to be the next popular artist, but people have mentioned they don’t think she has a big enough fan base to win such a valued award. It has been argued she should not have been considered for the award considering she has been making music for nine years.  She even wrote a song with Ariana Grande in 2019, which leads people to believe she should not have been considered for the award if she already had a collaboration with such a big artist.

Hannah Rass, a Groves student says, “I think it depends because a lot of the people in that category have been making music for a good amount of time it just depends on when you became popular”

For example, Gracie Abrams. Abrams was considered for the “Best New Artist” Grammy as well, due to her recent fame from opening for Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour”. Abrams has been making music since 2015, longer than Monét yet her fans have seemed to ignore that. They both were nominated for the award because they have just become popular.

Others have also been negative about her winning the Grammy because they don’t think her fan base is large enough for her to have won, and that led people to believe her win was rigged.

Beth Turton, a ninth grader at Groves says, “I don’t think she deserves the Grammy because Grammys are supposed to speak for the people, and none of the people I know know her.”

Monét may not have a big fan base, but that shouldn’t affect how much she deserves the award. She has been working hard for nine years straight, writing music for other artists and producing her own music. She is finally getting the recognition she deserves for all of the hard work she has accomplished.
