Cage the Elephant, an alternative rock band from Kentucky, made their way to PineKnob Music Theatre to perform a sold-out show on September 10th, 2024. Cage the Elephant was formed in 2006, in Bowling Green, Kentucky. But, shortly before their first album was released, they moved to London, England. The band currently consists of Matt Shultz (vocals), Brad Shultz (rhythm guitarist), Nick Bockrath (lead guitar), Matthew Minster (guitar, keyboard), Daniel Tichenor (bass) and Jared Champion (drums). The band’s debut album was released in 2006 and spawned the band’s large following in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Their 2024 tour, named after their new album, “Neon Pill” is scheduled to play arenas all across the U.S; its biggest venues are set in Nashville, Chicago, and Detroit.
The night at Pine Knob Music Theatre started out with Bakar and Youngthegiant as the openers. Bakar kicked off the evening with a unique blend of genres that immediately caught the audience’s attention. With a sound that melds indie rock, pop, and a hint of hip-hop, Bakar’s energetic performance was both refreshing and captivating. Tracks like “Hell N Back” had the crowd singing along, while his charismatic stage presence set the tone for the night. Next up was Youngthegiant, who opened with “Cough Syrup,” instantly igniting a wave of nostalgia. The band showcased their range with a mix of older and newer hits, their lead singer Sameer Gadhia’s powerful vocals shone through. Highlights include a soulful rendition of “My Body,” which had everyone on their feet, and “Mind Over Matter,” making it clear why they are a fan favorite.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, Cage the Elephant took the stage. The moment they launched into “Broken Boy,” the crowd erupted with energy. The band’s signature blend of rock, blues and a hint of psychedelic vibes filled the air, creating an atmosphere that felt both intimate and exhilarating.
Lead vocalist Matt Shultz was a whirlwind of energy— even while moving across the stage on a scooter due to his broken leg. The band showcased tracks from their latest album alongside beloved classics, including a soaring rendition of “Cigarette Daydreams” that left many in the audience swaying.
Highlights of the set included a powerful performance of “Trouble,” which had everyone singing along, and a cinematic finish with “Come a Little Closer.” The night was punctuated with impressive visuals which included vibrant lights and dynamic projections, enhancing the overall experience.
As the night came to a close, it was clear that this concert was not just a performance but an experience that brought together a diverse crowd, united by their love for Cage the Elephant’s music. Pine Knob once again proved to be a premier venue for live shows, and Cage the Elephant, along with their talented openers, delivered a night that fans would not soon forget.
