“The Artistic Process” created by Brett Schacker is an editorial comic strip commenting on AI art.
The first panel is Van Gogh painting Starry Night by looking out of the mental institution’s window while using oil paints to capture the vivid colors of the night. He’s experiencing a calm and expressive moment amidst the emotional turmoil he’s experiencing. The second panel is Hosukai creating the famous Great Wave Off Kanagawa by using a traditional wood carving technique. He’s inspired by the changes he’s observing in his home of Edo period Japan. The third panel encapsulates Gustav Klimt as he adds the finishing touches to The Kiss. He adds paint wash over the gold leaf to give it dimension. His inspiration comes from human relationships and love.
The fourth image presents a man sitting at a computer. He is further from the viewer than the rest, seemingly more isolated and distant. Above him, there is a Google-esque search bar with “https://imagemaker.ai” typed into it. This is the AI artist, typing a generic prompt into a search engine for an art piece made by artificial intelligence.
The AI artist looks distant and impersonal, much like his “art”. While the other artists within the comic are working hard to create vivid pieces inspired by their own experiences and outlook of the world, the AI artist simply and quickly creates an image with a computer.
The name of the comic strip is also a hint to its true meaning. “The Artistic Process” being in quotation marks shows the irony of calling all four people “artists” at all, since one of them misses the true meaning and dedication required of art.
