As students, we often think that we need to wait until we are adults to serve. In reality, service is a vital pillar in self-growth and discovery, not to mention the impact that said service can have on those around you and your community. At Groves, we are privileged enough to be presented with numerous opportunities to contribute to our local community. Whether you need community service hours for National Honors Society (NHS), Groves Student Congress (GSC), college or just personal recreation, there are so many opportunities each month to give back. Let’s dive into the service opportunities this October and November.
Starting off strong, Bingham Elementary School is searching for student volunteers to man the Bingham Boo on Oct. 17 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Bingham Farms Elementary School. While elementary students dance and craft with their families, volunteers will be running fun halloween games, maintaining a fun environment (such as aiding crying kids) and serving free pizza and drinks.
West Bloomfield Township is also hosting a Halloween event this year, the West Bloomfield Trick or Treat! Kids will have the opportunity to walk down a spirited trail trick or treating from costumed characters. This non-scary experience is the perfect place for families to trick or treat, and perfect if you are a bit averse to more intense costumes. The event will take place at Drake Park on Oct. 26 from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m! West Bloomfield is looking for volunteers willing to dress up, hand out candy, set up and clean up. This simple task is the perfect way to have fun and volunteer!
Not into Halloween? Try volunteering at Bloom Pediatrics! Bloom is dedicated to customer satisfaction and ease when taking on medical issues, and is excited to welcome any and all volunteers willing to help them achieve this goal. Multiple locations are available, so double check before committing that the location is correct. Volunteers must be willing to help in a flu and COVID-19 vaccine clinic and will be gifted a free t-shirt. This is a great opportunity if your post-secondary plans include pursuing the medical field.
As always, Gleaners Food Bank is eager for volunteers. Gleaners’ mission is to provide our community with sufficient, nutritious food and do their part to solve local hunger. Through Gleaners, students will have numerous opportunities to help those in need. Whether you want to sort food, plant gardens or work in delivery, Gleaners offers our most diverse option in terms of responsibilities. Overall, this is the perfect way to make a difference within our community and directly work with others.
Friendship Circle, a program centered in providing companionship for those with special needs, is a year-round program seeking students who would be willing to serve on Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Responsibilities include helping children with learning differences throughout the day, and overall just being a friend. Friendship Circle is a phenomenal way to build community and show leadership.
Want something quick and simple? Franklin Public Library is looking for students to come in and clean the library on Oct. 18 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Duties include tidying the space, organization, and straightening books on the shelves. We are lucky enough to have such an incredible library nearby, so any help that we can provide to our amazing librarians is very much appreciated.
West Bloomfield Township is working to honor our veterans at the 2025 Heroes Appreciation Breakfast at West Bloomfield Middle School! Our veterans are incredibly dedicated to serving us, so our community is working to serve them as well. This year, they are looking for volunteers on both the set up day, Nov. 3 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the actual event, Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Duties include serving food, and helping to set-up and clean up the space. This opportunity is a wonderful way to honor those who have served this country, so make sure to sign up!
Last but certainly not least, West Bloomfield Township is hosting yet another event, the Mother & Son dance at Glen Oaks Country Club! As families dance and eat, they are looking for volunteers willing to set up, decorate, and run stands within the event (ex: tattoo stand, photobooth, buffet). The dance will take place on Nov. 21 from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Looking forward to seeing you on the dance floor Falcons!
These are various ways that we can get involved, not only in our school community, but our community as a whole. Let’s serve, Falcons!
