As Groves settles into the first semester, students are starting to see the transition from summer into fall. The changing weather accompanies Spirit Week, homecoming and Groves’ beloved fall sports as a signal of autumn. For the 2025-2026 school year, after the wave of the always remembered retirees and transfers, the Scriptor would like to recognize the bright new minds filling their places— and what big shoes they have to fill. We would like to recognize the new staff teaching STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) classes. Groves has hired two new STEM teachers, Rebecca Flood in mathematics and Jessica Quinn in chemistry. To get a better understanding of who they are and how they’ll fit into our school community, we dove a little deeper into their lives by conducting interviews with each teacher.
Groves High School is entirely grateful that we got to welcome Jessica Quinn to our STEM team this year!
After making the decision to leave Royal Oak schools after 22 years, Quinn is excited to be a part of the Groves community!
“It’s the only school I would have come to, my kids have gone here, and I think the building environment is what matches best for me and the kids,” Quinn said.
Being able to welcome a teacher who is so excited to not only teach, but also be excited about being in our building is something that our community takes pride in.
“I have lots of teachers in my family, and I’ve had a lot of influential teachers in my life, and it is something that brings together what I can do well and what makes the world a better place,” Quinn said.
Quinn is very passionate about teaching science.
“Science is the best! In my opinion, it brings together so many other subjects, including history, math and English skills,” Quinn said.
Quinn talks very highly of her high school experience. She said she had good friends and teachers who were very passionate and made her want to go to school. Her hope is to provide the same experience she got to her students! Quinn said she is super excited for her time at Groves to start, and so are we!
In the Math department, Flood looks forward to teaching and inspiring students to work hard in class.
“I had really good teachers when I was in high school. They helped me gain confidence and brought me out of my shell. They inspired me to want to do the same for my students,” Flood said.
Her motivation to inspire students and help them become as successful as possible ensures that her students have the best experience in math class.
“I chose to come to Groves because I heard really good things about the administration and the community here,” Flood said. “My experience has been great so far. Everyone has been so welcoming, many people have gone out of their way to help me, and the students have been so kind.”
Flood loves how connected the community is within the school and feels so welcomed at Groves.
“ I found activities I was passionate about in high school. I want to do the same for the students here. I want to be patient with my students and understand that they have lives outside of school,” Flood said.
Her dedication to being kind and patient with students shows that she is a teacher who always has a positive attitude and truly cares about her students.
Throughout these interviews, we’ve learned how each teacher was inspired into their profession through their own schooling experiences and passions. These teachers are striving towards curating a welcoming environment for their students, just as Groves has warmly welcomed them. As each student within the school community navigates through the uncertain waters of a new school year, it’s the teachers who can help pull them ashore. These aren’t just teachers, they’re kind, inspiring new members who are perfect for integrating into the Wylie E. family.
