The Grammy Awards, presented by the Recording Academy, is a yearly award show that awards the best songs, music artists or albums of the past year. Taking place on February 2, 2025, nominations for the next upcoming Grammys have officially been announced. Many nominations were expected for artists such as Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift— and many nominations were expected but not given, such as the lack of nominations received by Ariana Grande.
On November 8, 2024, the nominations for the upcoming 67th annual Grammy Awards were announced. Beyoncé leads with 11 nominations,— her personal most in any year,— followed by Post Malone, Charli XCX and Kendrick Lamar with seven nominations each. Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter closed out the top three most nominated with six nominations each. These nominations were mostly expected due to the large number of albums or songs each of these artists released this past year.
There are various other artists whose work from the past year could or even should have been nominated.
“Faye Webster’s Underdressed at the Symphony, Clairo’s Charm, Kacey Musgraves’s Deeper Well, Hoizer’s Unheard and Zach Bryan’s The Great American Bar Scene are all albums that would have been great nominations for Album of the Year, or even the singles from each for Song of the Year,” Molly Brunt, a sophomore at Groves High School, said. A number of these albums were nominated in genre-specific categories but failed to receive nominations in any of the main categories. Similarly, another album that did not receive a main category nomination many thought would be Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine. The album, which was released on March 8, 2024, had two number-one hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as topping the Billboard 200— her sixth album to do so. Despite the critical acclaim and accolades the album received, it didn’t receive any nominations this year in any of the major categories.
The conversation surrounding the upcoming Grammy Awards isn’t just about what albums or songs didn’t receive nominations, but about some of the nominations that were given, as well.
The nomination causing the most talk is Sabrina Carpenter’s nomination for Best New Artist. Despite her debut album being released in 2015, Carpenter still received a nomination in a category for new artists. Her most recent release, Short n’ Sweet, is the sixth album she has released and was one of the biggest and most acclaimed albums of 2024. Carpenter was eligible for the nomination, despite the amount of time she’s been in the industry because there is no maximum amount of releases can artist can have to be nominated for the award. The only constraint in order to be nominated for this award is that you can only be submitted for consideration three times, and the artist must have five singles or one album released. Since Carpenter meets these criteria, she is eligible for the nomination. Some believe that she should not be eligible because she has released six albums and isn’t technically a “new artist” anymore. Carpenter even acknowledged this in a video she posted to her Instagram account on November 8, 2024 where she reacted to her nominations, “I’m the best old artist. I’ve been here” Carpenter said.
All in all, the nominations for the upcoming Grammy Awards have been announced and have spurred various topics of conversation, such as the nominations for Best New Artist and the genre diversity, in who is nominated in the main categories. If you want to find out who wins each category, you can watch on February 8, 2025.
