With over a thousand holiday movies playing during the 25 days leading up to Christmas, it seems hard to choose which ones are worth watching. According to Google, some of the greatest holiday movies include How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Elf, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story and A Very Classic Charlie Brown Christmas.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas is an adaptation of the children’s story, by Dr. Seuss. The green Grinch decides to ruin Christmas for the people of Whoville who take Christmas very seriously. The Grinch is joined by his dog, Max. They both come down from their mountaintop home and sneak into town, swiping everything holiday-related from the Whos. However, the Grinch finds a hitch in his plans when he meets a little girl, named Cindy Lou Who.
Elf is another very well-known movie during the winter time. In Elf, Buddy– played by Will Ferrell– is a human raised as one of Santa’s elves, who discovers at age 30 that he has a real father– Walter– living in New York City. However, Walter is on Santa’s “naughty” list. So, Buddy leaves the North Pole to find him, knowing only the North pole and what he’s learned from the elves.
The next movie on the list, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (one of my favorite holiday movies), is about a father named Clark Griswold’s efforts to have a nice, old-fashioned family Christmas, but it takes a turn for the worse.
Another classic Christmas movie on the list is A Christmas Story. Ralphie Parker spends most of his time dodging a bully and dreaming of his ideal Christmas gift, which is a Red Ryder air rifle that his parents have convinced him he will not be getting.
A Very Classic Charlie Brown Christmas, this film includes Charlie Brown, who is upset because the Christmas season is so commercial, but cheers up when Lucy asks him to direct the holiday pageant. However, the bossy Lucy doesn’t allow him to do much directing, and sends Charlie off to buy an aluminum Christmas tree.
Many people have seen these movies at least once, and I was curious to see what most people’s favorite holiday movies are– and to see if they were on the list. Here is what the people of Groves had to say:
“A Christmas Story,” David Jones and Isabel De Demo-Cho said.
When I asked why they chose this movie (compared to the other holiday movies), they both said it was because they watch it every year with their family.
I asked other people why they liked this movie compared to the others, as well. Many people said the same thing; it was nostalgic to them in some way. A Christmas Story was a popular answer amongst many Groves students for their favorite holiday movie. I also wanted to know what people thought was the most overplayed movie during this time.
“Elf, gosh I hate that movie,” Penelope Doty said.
I do agree, it seems to always be playing on some channel during the month of December. For Groves, it appears that A Christmas Story is the favorite holiday movie and Elf is the most overplayed movie (in the opinion of Groves High School).
