The University of Michigan and Ohio State went head to head this past week in college football, making a name for the game of the week; even surpassing the popular talk of the Lions. While the Buckeyes were the expected winner, the audience’s expectations were shattered as the ranked two teams fell down to 7th by the unranked Wolverines.
The first Quarter was mostly uneventful, with just a few good passes and runs here and there. However, by the halfway mark of the first quarter, Ohio State had Michigan backed up to their end zone, earning a 29-yard field goal from their kicker, Jayden Fielding.
The second quarter started off fast as Ohio State was kicked back to their end zone, stopping a 4th down touchdown from Michigan’s Quarterback, Davis Warren. However, on third down, Ohio State threw an interception to number 12, Aamir Hall, barely missing the end zone from Carnell Tate. With the next play rewarding a touchdown from Michigan’s running back, Kalel Mullings and a successful extra point from Dominic Zvada. The next push from Ohio State resulted in a missed field goal, retaliated by Michigan with a 54-yard field goal from Zvada. With 30 seconds left of the quarter, Ohio State quarterback, Will Howard, threw a touchdown to Jeremiah Smith, with an extra point to finish it off.
The third quarter had no points scored, but the fourth quarter had a promising tiebreaker. With 45 seconds left of the game, Michigan had Ohio State once again backed into their end zone. A 21-yard field goal from Zvada was enough to secure the win for Michigan.
The Ohio State team’s tradition is to sing “Carmen Ohio”, which was happening at the south side of the stadium. During which, Michigan players Raheem Anderson and Tavierre Dunlap attempted to plant their flag on Ohio State’s symbol in the center of the field, resulting in an all-out brawl from both teams. At some point, the flag was swiped away from the players, resulting in more fighting. It was later revealed that police officers from both sides used pepper spray to stop the brawl and both teams were fined $100,000.
The unexpected win from Michigan has resulted in a major rank loss for Ohio State, pushing them down to 7th. They will also likely not be playing in the Big Ten championship game. For Michigan, this is a country-wide awakening to their team and their potential this year, as this rivalry is currently one of the most heated in college football.
